Caltron’s Sinker EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) process, also called cavity-type EDM or volume EDM, creates complex, geometric shapes that would be difficult to produce with any other common cutting method.
As its name suggests Sinker EDM “sinks” cavities to a depth through submerging electrode-connected materials in insulating liquids, such as oil. Once submerged, the workpieces are connected to Caltron’s transistor generator, which conducts electricity and causes erosion to the production material, effectively “sinking” it. The transistor current created by the generator, which is automatically switched on and off to “melt” the material being used, gradually shapes the production material into its desired form. Due to its gradual process, Sinker EDM is the best procedure for the production of most dies and molds and can be used to customize all types of metals – hard, soft, and exotic – into specific figures.
Caltron has over 60 years of experience in Sinker EDM and uses its premium Mitsubishi machines for a variety of industry manufacturing and production needs.
Three Major Benefits of Sinker EDM:
- Near-perfect accuracy and fine finishes
- Ability to cut and mold even the most complex materials
- Rapid production times
